During the summer months, children who lack quality learning experiences tend to lose academic skills over the school break. Such losses, which equate to two months of a grade level each summer, accumulate year after year. Studies have shown that by the end of eighth grade, summer learning loss can account for 66 percent of the achievement gap. The YMCA of Grays Harbor is one of six locations in the country piloting a new program called Power Scholars Academy Camp to fight this summer learning loss.
Power Scholars Academy Camp combines math and reading instruction in the morning with camp like enrichment activities and field trips in the afternoon.
By marrying the elements of camp with summer learning in an adaptable program model, Power Scholars Academy Camp makes high quality summer learning a possibility.
Power Scholars Academy Camp has been infused into the YMCA of Grays Harbor’s summer childcare program. More than 85 kids are enrolled in our program and are fighting summer learning loss.
