My name is Susan and I am a Y member. I joined the Y in 2011 because I was becoming a grandmother. I knew I wanted to live a long healthy active life with my new grandson.
I signed up for a Wellness Connection. Little did I know that was going to change the rest of my life. I met with M’Chele, a Y Trainer, and we went over my goals and what I was wanting out of my
membership. She went over the classes that were taught and set me up with a weight room orientation.
I went through my orientation in the weight room with a boy that was a classmate of my son’s; talk about embarrassing. He weighted me and took my BMI, showed me the machines and how to operate them. He set me up with a workout routine to follow.
The next day I hit the weight room. I will never forget that day as long as I live. I was on the elliptical trainer for 10 minutes and was pure sweat and huffing and puffing, I thought I was going to
collapse. I was so embarrassed I thought everyone in the weight room was looking at me. I looked around to see nobody was looking at me or even paying attention to my huffing, puffing, and gasping for air. They were all doing their own workout and not even noticing the new kid on the block! From that day on the weight room no longer intimidated me.
Three years ago when I joined the Y if you would have told me I could run 13.2 miles I would have laughed in your face. I could have run 13.2 seconds. Today, my grandson Bodie loves to look at pictures of Grammy running and says that he is going to run with Grammy someday.
The person I am today is because of the Y.
